Undergraduate
Certificate in Physical & Digital Counter-Terrorism
(18 Credits, 6
Courses)
Today’s terrorist organization is more likely to be a
network of loosely connected cells, bound by a common ideology, than a
rigid military-style hierarchy with a clear-cut political goal.
The modern terrorist can act with much greater autonomy
than ever before. Moreover, the development of unifying communication
technologies allows a terrorist cell to operate without the support of
a wealthy state sponsor.
Cryptography and global telecommunication technologies have
provided terrorist networks with applied tools and applications they
can utilize to securely communicate with members worldwide via covert
channels. These tactics allow members to be distributed around the
globe with little or no physical contact among them. The tools they
use present a great challenge for both the
US and international
counter-terrorism agencies.
However, just as this infrastructure allows terrorist
networks to "think globally and operate locally" it also allows
counter-terrorists to concurrently share information more efficiently
and effectively thus allowing them to investigate and prevent both
physical and cyber attacks on our homeland.
NJIT’s newest undergraduate certificate in Physical &
Digital Counter-Terrorism aims at creating a new generation of
counter-terrorism experts. These experts will possess knowledge not
only on the traditional (physical) counter-terrorism strategies but
also in cyber-security and cyber-investigation aspects of
counter-terrorism which will aid in the overall protection of the
critical infrastructure of our state and ultimately our nation.
NJIT is a NSA Center of Academic Excellence in Information
Assurance Education. NJIT also houses the NJ Homeland Security
Technology Systems Center which collaboratively works with the State
of New Jersey
on an advisory position for counter-terrorism procedures.
